Dear Music Community:
We have some very good news to share. But first, a little background:
For the past four years, the POSAM (Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music) organization has sponsored and administered the jam session at the Oolenoy Community Building every Friday night, with the help of some very dedicated and gracious volunteers. Our community has benefited immeasurably from this weekly gathering. We have seen a community grow, friendships established, and astounding talent developed in our youth as a result of these jam sessions. Your dedication as attendees, and participants, has helped weave this weekly event into the fabric of our community.
Hosting a jam session of two to three hundred people every Friday night requires more than just musicians and attendees. It requires resources to manage and keep going; committed people to set up, clean up, provide a secure environment, assure a spirit of happiness, and unfortunately, resolve intergroup conflicts at times. And yes, financial resources are always a factor. Under POSAM , a select few have taken these burdens upon their shoulders over the past few years. We are very grateful for their commitment to keep the jam session going. Without them, it could not have continued thus far.
After some deliberation, the POSAM board of directors has decided it is best to give this community event back to the community. Effective immediately, POSAM is transferring sponsorship of the weekly jam session to a separate entity. This new group is very excited about keeping the jam session going. The lease of the community center is being transferred from POSAM to the new organization this week. To assist with the transition, POSAM has provided the funds to cover the rent through the end of this year.
We look forward to seeing the jam session continue for many years to come. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we have worked to find this solution with some of the leaders of our music community.
Now let’s make some music! We hope to see you this Friday night, and every Friday night, at the Oolenoy Community Building.
Sincerely,
Preserving Our Southern Appalachian Music board of directors
