The Traditional Arts and Music (TAM YAM) Camp was held at the Holly Springs Center located at 120 Holly Springs School Rd in Pickens, July 10-14th and July 17-21, 2023. The camp was open to ALL (from ANYWHERE) rising 3rd-9th graders. In the mornings instruction was offered by local musicians in the traditional instrument of their choice (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and banjo—all levels). Afternoons were spent doing a variety of activities: clogging/square dancing, creek play, candle making, pottery, intro to dulcimer, orienteering, and more. Since camp was located at the beautiful Holly Springs Center in Northern Pickens County, there was excellent access to classes in their School of Mountain Arts. Additionally campers were offered Classes in Academic Enrichment for one hour each day (CAREs time). These included a blend of STEM activities, nature study, local history, and book/writing activities.
Students were able to bring their own instruments or rent the instruments at camp for a nominal fee. Scholarships made camp accessible to all! Camp ran from 8:30-4 and also provided extended care from 7:30-8:30 and/or 4-5:30 for an extra fee. Campers were chosen on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Camp costs were based on the “lunch status” of the participants:
